About Me
My name is JoAnne Bennett Mirsky and I am a chiropractor by profession with a special interest in nutrition. Throughout my undergraduate education, I pursued a number of courses in nutrition at the University of Western Ontario. As a student of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, I graduated cum laude and won the Drs Phillip and Laura Martin Nutrition Award for highest academic achievement in clinical nutrition.
Currently, I am a mentor for a variety of places including the JDRF, Markham Stouffville Hospital Pediatric Diabetes Clinic and Animas Canada volunteering my support to newly diagnosed children with diabetes and celiac (which commonly occur together as they are genetically linked). As well, I am a current member of the Canadian Celiac Association and R.O.C.K. (Raising Our Celiac Kids). I am also part of an initiative that is trying to implement healthy nutrition in the public schools in York Region.
I became interested in the gluten free diet when my daughter who has type 1 diabetes was diagnosed with celiac disease at a young age. As a professional, I have the education and knowledge to give accurate and current information about living with celiac. As a mother, I understand the feeling of what it's like when the doctor tells you the cure to your disease is to go on a gluten free diet and then you are left with the daunting task of figuring out what is involved in this new lifestyle.
